Carson and Colorado RR 1

Carson & Colorado Railroad The railroad was started in Mound House, Nev. and reached Keeler Calif. on August 1, 1883. It was a narrow gauge (3 ft.) line that ran through the Owens Valley and along the east side of Owens Lake, serving many small towns and mines along its 300 mile course. Towards the end of WWI, a number of soda-ash processing plants were built on the east side of the lake. The railroad was the major mover of the soda ash until the end of 1930 when the mines played out. Keeler was also a busy major repair facility. In 1900 the railroad was sold to the Southern Pacific RR Co. By 1920 a major decrease in rail traffic caused the northern section to shut down all the ways to Laws, where the museum is located today. It was a very interesting 5 day trip up to Bishop; Laws is located about 7 miles to the northeast of Bishop which is 350 north on highway 395. http://freepages.history.rootsweb.com/~gtusa/usa/ca/ccrr.htm Here is one of a number of web sites if anyone is interested in further info on this little railroad.
